CNN —When Lauren Price was eight years old, she wrote down three goals for herself – to become a kickboxing world champion, play international soccer for Wales and compete at an Olympic Games. At 12, she was a world kickboxing champion, a title she won another three times. “This is just the start,” Price, now the WBA, IBO and Ring Magazine welterweight champion, told broadcaster Sky Sports afterwards. Lauren Price won a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021. My nan used to say ‘reach for the moon, if you fall short you’ll land on the stars,’” Price told Sky Sports.

Families with college-bound students may well have shuddered when they heard that the official, full cost of a year at some four-year private schools will soon hit six figures. But outrage over mushrooming college “sticker” prices clouds a reality that some families may not fully understand: Few students pay the full price. On average, private nonprofit colleges cut tuition by more than half for first-time undergraduates, according to a recent report from the National Association of College and University Business Officers. That means college sticker prices — the full “cost of attendance” that the federal government requires colleges to publish — are an increasingly unreliable indicator of what a family will pay, according to a report titled, in part, “Ignore the Sticker Price,” and published Friday by the Brookings Institution, a Washington think tank. That goes for both low- and middle-income families, as well as for higher-income families that don’t qualify for need-based aid.

FCC cracks down on cable TV ‘junk fees’
  + stars: | 2024-03-14 | by ( Brian Fung | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +9 min
The new junk fees rule requires cable and satellite TV companies to list “all-in” prices to consumers in their billing and marketing materials — including any miscellaneous fees, such as those related to sports programming or local broadcast channels. Between 24% and 33% of the typical consumer’s bill can be attributed to fees, consumer advocates told the FCC. In a separate move last year, the FCC proposed banning certain cable fees altogether, including early termination fees that the agency says hinder competition and prevent customers from easily switching providers. Mending the digital divideIn addition to cable, the FCC also addressed internet availability during its Thursday meeting. Defining high-speed internetThe report also reflects newly adopted revisions in how the country defines high-speed internet, which the FCC voted to approve on Thursday.

Caitlin Clark is breaking more records

New York CNN —It wouldn’t be a Caitlin Clark game without a record being broken. The average purchase price for her game, as of Tuesday morning, is 1,100% more expensive ($557) than the average price of a WNBA game ($49). Clark hasn’t said if she will forgo the 2024 WNBA draft — where she is projected to be selected first overall — or remain in college for a fifth season. That meant college athletes like Clark could start making money off their likeness. Clark has also signed deals with Gatorade, Nike and State Farm, among others.

Few prices are as visible to Americans as the ones they encounter at the grocery store or drive-through window, which is why two years of rapid food inflation have been a major drag for U.S. households and the Biden administration. But now, the trend in grocery and restaurant inflation appears to be on the cusp of changing. After months of rapid increase, the cost of food at home climbed at a notably slower clip in January. And from packaged food providers to restaurant chains, companies across the food business are reporting that they are no longer raising prices as steeply. In others, it’s because the prices that companies pay for inputs like packaging and labor are no longer rising as sharply.

New York CNN —Lionel Messi’s debut in his first full Major League Soccer season might not cost fans the extraordinary prices seen last year for his first-ever game with Inter Miami, but they do show that “Messi Mania” hasn’t diminished despite his rocky preseason. That’s 1,257% more expensive than the cheapest, or “get in” price of last season’s home opener when it cost $7 for a seat. Prices on the secondary market are elevated for the rest of Inter Miami’s season with tickets about 70% more expensive than last year. In particular, Inter Miami sales are 150-times higher compared to the start of last season and is the most in-demand MLS team, with the Los Angeles Galaxy in second and the New England Revolution in third. “The surge in sales for Inter Miami, and the league as a whole, are a testament to his legacy as a soccer star,” said StubHub spokesperson Adam Budell told CNN.

Clark ended Thursday with 3,569 career points and could set the all-time scoring record in men’s and women’s NCAA basketball history before the season’s end. The late Pete Maravich, who played at Louisiana State for three seasons from 1967 to 1970, holds that record – 3,667 points. Her 49 points Thursday also was a one-game best for her in college, and a one-game best for any University of Iowa women’s basketball player. Inflation cooled less than expected in January and showed worrying staying power after volatile food and fuel costs were stripped out — a reminder that bringing price increases under control remains a fraught, bumpy process. But after stripping out food and fuel, which bounce around in price from month to month, “core” prices held roughly steady on an annual basis, climbing 3.9 percent from a year earlier. American consumers, the White House and Federal Reserve officials had welcomed a recent moderation in inflation. Central bankers in particular are likely to take the fresh report as a reminder that they need to remain cautious. Policymakers have been careful to avoid declaring victory over inflation, insisting that they needed more evidence that it was coming down sustainably.

The Consumer Price Index inflation measure is set for release at 8:30 a.m. Eastern. Economists expect that prices overall climbed 2.9 percent from a year earlier, the lowest reading in nearly three years. After stripping out food and fuel, which bounce around in price from month to month, a “core” price measure probably climbed 3.7 percent, slower than 3.9 percent in December. But as price increases ease up, people are beginning to report sunnier economic outlooks. More recently, price increases for key services have also begun to moderate.

New York CNN —Ticket prices for this year’s Super Bowl have dropped since last week, but it still might require hitting a casino jackpot to afford it. Despite the drop, this year’s Super Bowl still remains the most expensive on record, with the average purchase price currently at $9,850 — 70% more than the average purchase price of last year’s big game. The 2020 game, which was between the same two teams, was previously the most expensive Super Bowl on record, according to TickPick, which had an average purchase price of $6,370. Compared to the ticket prices, getting to Las Vegas and finding a place to sleep might seem like a bargain. The Federal Trade Commission said its first “undercover phone sweep” of funeral homes across the country had found that dozens didn’t accurately disclose costs for services to callers. Of the more than 250 funeral businesses F.T.C. employees called, 38 either didn’t answer questions about prices or supplied inconsistent prices for identical services, the commission said. The 39 funeral homes received warning letters in January that they had failed to comply with a law known as the Funeral Rule. enforces the rule, which outlines protections for consumers shopping for funeral services.

A Key Inflation Measure Cooled in December

A measure of inflation closely watched by the Federal Reserve continued to cool in December, the latest sign that price increases are coming back under control even as growth remains solid and the labor market healthy. In particularly positive news, a key gauge of price increases dipped below 3 percent for the first time since early 2021. The Personal Consumption Expenditures price index picked up 2.6 percent last month compared to a year earlier. Fed officials aim for 2 percent price increases, so today’s inflation remains elevated. In their latest economic projections, central bankers predicted that inflation would cool to 2.4 percent by the end of the year.

Platinum is used to make the electrolyzers that produce hydrogen and the sharp down cycle in South Africa’s platinum mining sector demonstrates the risk that low prices and lack of investment could slow the energy transition. Prices for other commodities have also fallen, while miners have been complaining of rising costs and seem to be limiting their capital expenditures. Inflation eased in October and price increases showed encouraging signs of slowing under the surface, according to fresh data released on Tuesday. The report provided the Federal Reserve with renewed evidence that its battle against rapid inflation is working — and likely reduced the need for further rate increases. The overall Consumer Price Index slowed to 3.2 percent last month on a year-over-year basis, lower than the 3.7 percent reading in September and the coolest since July. Inflation has come down meaningfully over the past year after peaking at just above 9 percent on an overall basis in the summer of 2022. Fed officials are trying to wrestle price increases back to roughly the 2 percent pace that was normal before the pandemic by raising interest rates, which they hope will slow consumer and business demand.
